Staff Counselor and Mental Skills Consultant

The North Carolina Central University Counseling Center seeks a dedicated mental health professional to support the well-being and performance of student-athletes and other high-performing students. This unique role combines clinical counseling with mental skills training to help students thrive academically, personally, and in specialized domains such as athletics, performing arts, recreation, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling for personal, social, educational, and vocational concerns.
  • Deliver mental skills training and wellness support for student-athletes and other high-performance populations.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational workshops on topics such as study skills, stress management, and assertiveness training.
  • Conduct assessments to assist with decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Develop and present outreach programs to promote mental health and performance.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management, including participation in an on-call rotation.
  • Advocate for students and coordinate referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders on student issues.
  • Supervise and train graduate practicum students and interns as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development and serve on committees within the Counseling Center, Division of Student Affairs, and University.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or a related field.
  • Full (unencumbered) Licensure or eligibility for full licensure in North Carolina if transferring an unencumbered license from another state.
  • Experience working with student-athletes or performers in high-performance environments.
  • Strong skills in mental health counseling, crisis intervention, and mental skills training.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and engage in outreach initiatives.
