The IACS accredited UCM Counseling Center (CC) seeks an Athletics Mental Health Clinician to join its team of professionals. The candidate would join a team that values diversity, strives to practice and promote healthy functioning, and supports one another to do its best work.
 
The full-time Athletics Mental Health Clinician supports UCM Athletics through direct clinical services to student athletes, coordination of treatment with team physicians and athletic trainers, outreach and training to coaches, teams, and athletic staff, and consultation to athletics leadership and staff. The services are intended to promote student-athlete mental health, holistic wellness, academic achievement, and athletic excellence. An understanding of athletic identity and culture is critical to the success of this position.
 
The successful candidate will be a team-oriented professional who enjoys supporting student athletes and will work closely with Athletics personnel to created a healthy and successful program. We encourage individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds to apply.

 

Examples of Duties

65%

  • Conduct initial consultations and triage assessments.
  • Provide evidence based therapeutic interventions on individual or group bases.
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments and crisis management.
  • Provide treatment recommendations, referrals, and resources.
  • Serve as lead point of contact to de-escalate mental health crises for student athletes, including occasional after-hours/on-call services if needed. Assist in post-crisis coordination of referrals for follow-up care and campus and sport reintegration efforts, as appropriate.

  • Complete accurate and timely documentation.
  • Participate in staff, clinical, and treatment team meetings, including collegial consultation on clinical and student concerns.

  • Conduct workshops on supporting mental health and developing mental skills.
  • Develop trusting and meaningful relationships with athletes, coaches, staff, and sports medicine team.
  • Provide education, training, and consultation to coaches and staff regarding psychological well-being of of individual student-athletes and team members.
  • If qualified and as clinical load permits, provide consultation and intervention to athletes, coaches, and staff regarding mental performance on individual, team, and/or program levels.

  • Engage in professional development to maintain licensure and certification(s).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Typical Qualifications

Education:

  • Masters in Counseling, Social Work, or in related field that meets criteria for Missouri (MO) State licensure as Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Marital & Family Therapist (LMFT) required.
  • Coursework or additional training in sport psychology, athletics, performance.

Experience:
  • Two (2) years (full time or equivalent) providing clinical mental health services required.
  • One (1) year in higher education setting working with student athletes or one (1) year in sports psychology required.
  • Experience in university/college counseling center preferred.
