Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) is seeking a Staff Therapist with American Sign Language (ASL) skills to join the team. The Staff Therapist works within a multidisciplinary team and reports to an Associate Director in CaPS. This position provides goal-directed therapy services to RIT students, consults with families and RIT community members, provides educational and outreach programming, and supports the training of graduate trainees in mental health fields. The successful Staff Therapist values a multifaceted approach to supporting student well-being involving strongly linked clinical and training efforts; collabroation with the campus community; mental health prevention/early intervention; and commitment to accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position will serve Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students as well as Hearing students. Proficiency in both ASL and English are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide individual and group therapy services to culturally diverse undergraduate and graduate student population. Conduct needs assessments, intake evaluations, treatment follow-up, and appropriate referrals. Provide urgent care and crisis intervention. Direct clinical service may occur in the Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) main office and in embedded locations on campus.
  • Develop and deliver mental health outreach and educational programming to campus partners. Occasional programming and special event needs will be delivered in the evenings and on weekends. Certain recurring university events, such as Student Orientation, require full staff participation.
  • Actively support the graduate training program through design and delivery of didactic training seminars, supervision, and/or assistance with the design and implementation of other related training activities.
  • Maintain clinical documentation in a thorough and timely manner
  • Review trainee session recordings and documentation.
  • Track and report on outreach activities.
  • Participate in CaPS staff meetings, peer consultation group, IHS Case Collaboration. Attend CaPS supervisory meetings.
  • In collaboration with supervisor, participate in campus committees, programs, professional development opportunities, and working groups.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

EDUCATION

  • Master’s degree in a mental health discipline (i.e. psychology, counseling, social work)
  • Must be licensed or license-eligible in New York State as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Independent license and diagnostic privilege must be obtained within two years of hire date.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of two years of clinical experience with young adults or adults in a dynamic mental health setting with demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A minimum of one year of experience serving Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals and providing therapy in American Sign Language (ASL).

SPECIALIZED SKILLS

  • Experience providing evidence-based short-term individual therapy, consultation, crisis intervention, and case management with a range of clinical issues.
  • Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments in the clinical context.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Advanced or better on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview or equivalent
  • Ability to provide therapy in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture
  • Experience working effectively with historically marginalized populations.
  • Ability to develop and provide relevant consultation and educational outreach services in a higher education learning community.
  • Ability to work independently within a dynamic clinical and learning environment.
  • Understanding of, and compliance with, the ethical and legal issues involved in the provision of clinical services.
  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Experience using information technology and computerized databases, including electronic health records.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

OPTIONAL

  • Experience providing clinical supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing culturally competent services to a diverse client population, with an emphasis on serving transgender students and students on the autism spectrum.
  • Ability to provide therapy in Mandarin, Hindi, Farsi, Bengali, or Nepali.
