POSITION PURPOSE

 

The Director of Clinical Services (DCCS) leads, coordinates, and provides strategic direction for counseling services at the Whitman Health and Counseling Clinic. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Wellness, the DCCS works closely with the clinic's leadership team to ensure integrated care delivery across health and counseling services. This position provides oversight of clinical staff and operations while also maintaining a reduced caseload of student clients.

 

Starting Fall 2025, Whitman will formally integrate health and counseling services. The clinic includes five full-time counselors, a part-time counselor, and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, serving about 1,400 students—a strong student-to-clinician ratio reflecting institutional commitment to mental health.

 

The DCCS is instrumental in evaluating and improving mental health services with a focus on equitable access, clinical supervision, and coordination of care.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Leadership (55%)

 

  • Supervise clinical counseling staff, including licensed and pre-licensed providers.

 

  • Evaluate services to ensure high-quality care; conduct performance reviews and manage staff scheduling and time-off requests.

 

  • Serve as a key member of the Wellness Leadership Team.

 

  • Lead case distribution, referrals, and crisis consultation.

 

  • Manage clinical operations, including EHR usage, policy development, and administrative processes.

 

  • Support the AVP of Wellness, including serving on the CARE team and providing backup during absences.

 

Direct Clinical Services (45%)

 

  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling to a diverse student body.

 

  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation.

 

  • Assist with psychiatric hospitalizations and referrals.

 

  • Offer psychoeducation and consultation to students and campus partners.

 

  • Deliver training on mental health awareness and prevention to faculty, staff, and students.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism, and access.

 

  • Strong crisis management and clinical supervision skills.

 

  • Ability to adapt to evolving circumstances and innovate within a brief therapy model.

 

  • Competence in data-informed decision-making and program development.

 

  • Adherence to professional ethics and clinical best practices.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master's in clinical/counseling psychology, counselor education, or social work.

 

  • Licensed in Washington State or eligible for licensure within 3 months of hire.

 

  • 5+ years of post-licensure experience.

 

  • 2-3 years of supervisory experience with licensed and pre-licensed clinicians.

 

  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in a relevant field.

 

  • 3-5 years in a college or university counseling center.

 

  • Experience in an integrated health setting.

 

  • Familiarity with Health Promoting Campuses, the Okanagan Charter, or Collective Impact frameworks.
