The Founder’s College at Butler University seeks to hire a Social Worker / Library Assistant who will be integral to supporting the students in the College. The primary focus of this full-time staff position is to develop, promote and deliver effective and innovative instructional services to students, faculty and staff while simultaneously offering consultation, counseling, short-term crisis response, and case management support services. The position will collaborate with Butler Libraries faculty to integrate information literacy into curriculum, leveraging existing library online assets. The library-based social worker will work closely with the Founder’s College team and the Dean of Libraries using a student-centered approach which is integrated with the mission of Founder’s College.
Opening in the fall of 2025, Butler University’s Founder’s College will offer affordable, career-connected, two-year associate degrees in business management, youth and community advocacy, healthcare studies, and business data analytics. Indiana students for whom college was out of reach because of cost and who have demonstrated high ability to succeed in college will be prioritized for admittance.

Responsibilities
- Provide consultation, counseling, short-term crisis response, and case management support services for all Founder’s students and where applicable, staff and faculty as they triage with students
- Provide current and relevant information, support, referrals, and assistance to students and families via tabling events, workshops, guest speakers, online resources, drop-in office hours, resource table hours, scheduled appointments, and community collaborations.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy into curriculum.
- Design, schedule and conduct activities to promote the use of the library’s online assets (LibGuides [maintain], databases, Ebooks, LibAnswers) to meet the needs of Founder’s students
- Participate in collection development by recommending materials and resources.
- Provide or cause to provide specialty services for advance service needs such as mental health, substance abuse, domestic abuse, grief, discrimination, parenting, and aging as they experience life challenges, with a trauma-informed perspective.
- Bring in and create internal and community programming which enhances the social functioning of students, community members, including support groups and programs.
- Demonstrate professionalism by adhering to the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.
- Establish benchmarks and data metrics to track improvement in solving for students’ well-being and social mobility (life plans and resource deployment) and report out trends and performance comparisons. Compile, analyze and report statistics for the reference and instructional program.
- Define ways for relationships to be built with students and their families in solving for well-being and life friction and establish a community support
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university in social work AND at least two years of relevant professional experience.
- Awareness of library reference and instructional programs.
- Ability to recommend resources and materials to patrons
- Develops plans for services and programs for the community served; schedules, delivers, evaluates with feedback of participants. Implements programming including computer instruction.
- Awareness of print and electronic resources offered by the library and popular computer applications.
- Knowledge of community resources and social service agencies serving the community.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated passion for working to improve the lives of people across the community.
- Demonstrated understanding of principles of social equity.
- Knowledge of and ability to use current technology and ability to adapt to new technologies.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain student privacy and confidentiality.
- Ability and initiative to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Ability to use personal judgment to effectively problem solve.
The ideal candidate will additionally have the following qualifications:
- Established relationships with community-based organizations.
- Experience working in libraries or community-based social work initiatives
- Computer and data management skills
- Entry level library reference and or customer service experience preferred
- Indiana State Librarian Certificate - any level
- Certified School Social Work Specialist (C-SSWS)
- Certified Social Work Case Manager (C-SWCM)
