The Behavioral Health Clinical Case Manager (BHCCM) is a University Counseling Center (UCC) position embedded in University Health Services (UHS) which facilitates the coordination of care for students whose presentation of issues at UHS includes behavioral health concerns. The BHCCM is integrally involved in supporting the expansion of mental health screenings for all students at every UHS visit including risk assessment and connection to the corresponding level of care to address mental health needs. The BHCCM provides brief behavioral health interventions to students and offers consultation on behavioral health and wellness issues within the primary care setting of UHS. The BHCCM facilitates referrals to the UCC for mental health treatment and facilitates the coordination of care between the UCC and UHS. The BHCCM participates in health and wellness activities, outreach efforts, and will serve on University committees coordinating suicide prevention efforts on campus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees the expansion of the mental health screening program at UHS for depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) to include all students seeking services at UHS at every visit.
    • Collaborates with UHS leadership to develop protocols and to provide training to providers in screening procedures.
    • Provides education brief intervention, risk assessment, and follow-up to students identified as at risk through the screening process.
    • Assists in gathering data which will be utilized to evaluate efficacy of the program and fidelity to established protocols. Future screen tools may be added for substance use, eating concerns, etc.
  • Delivers the following types of behavioral interventions within the primary care setting of UHS:
    • Brief behavioral interventions to students as part of their health care visit based on referrals from the UHS provider. Makes treatment and management recommendations to the PCP. In collaboration with the provider, offers recommendations for additional support services, mental health treatments or psychiatric specialty care. Documents interventions and services in the UHS patient record keeping system.
    • Recommends and facilitates referrals to the UCC or to off-campus for mental health treatment. When making referrals to the UCC, the BHCCM has the student complete the UCC forms, reviews completed forms, conducts the equivalent of the UCC drop-in assessment with the student, and recommends appropriate services at the UCC. Documents these student encounters in the UCC record keeping system.
    • Provides case management in support of UHS providers when caring for students with mental health issues.
    • Coordinates and initiates psychiatric hospitalization for students who present with significant risk factors at UHS. Also, participates in regular staff UHS departmental meetings, and attends UCC meetings as appropriate.
  • Participate in the campus-wide Suicide Prevention Coalition and Zero Suicide Prevention Working group within the Student Health & Wellness area to support SAMHSA grant activities to enhance suicide prevention and treatment.
  • The BHCCM participates in health and wellness activities, outreach efforts, and other administrative responsibilities for the Student Health and Wellness area, as assigned.

This is a 3-year, limited term position through September 20, 2027 funded by a SAMHSA grant.
