Position Summary

Director of Counseling is a member of Student Life and reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. This position aids students in making a successful transition into college and accomplishing personal and academic goals through providing psychological services to students on personal/social issues, educational concerns, career choice, and multicultural concerns. While this position supports all UIU students, the primary focus for services is the Fayette campus, with consultation and outreach services reaching all students in order to consult with faculty and staff on issues relevant to student educational performance, emotional well-being, and psychological functioning.

 

Position Responsibilities

This position plays a critical role in the department and is essential to our students.
 
Administration
  • Oversee full-time counselor.
  • Administer yearly budget for counseling services.
  • Prepare and submit monthly and annual reports vital to the counseling office (Board of Trustees Counseling report.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with all federal, state, and local statues which govern the delivery of counseling services.
  • Organize and disseminate information regarding upcoming counseling office events to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Participate in student personnel and counseling conferences in order to further develop our programs on campus.
  • Market services through the creation and dissemination of promotional literature, campus newspaper, family newsletter, in- and out-of-class presentations and student orientation days, meetings with teams, student organizations and clubs as well as School meetings.
  • Update the standard operating policies and procedures of office.
  • Document clients’ interaction and secure all counseling records.
  • Promote and practice APA/NASW Ethical Standards.
  • Maintain counseling center resources which include facilities and educational library.
  • Advocate the needs of students to faculty, staff and administration.
  • Maintain relationships with area referral agencies.
Counseling/Advising 
  • Provide individual and group counseling.
  • Schedule appointments with clients.
  • Provide alcohol and drug screenings to students referred due to student code of conduct violations.
Educational Development and Programming 
  • Provide counseling information to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Develop and implement educational programs to meet the psychological needs of students and help the faculty identify red flags.
Committee Work
  • Participate on the Behavioral Intervention Team.
  • Participate and consults on the SOS committee.
  • Participate on Employee Wellness Committee.
  • Part of Emergency Operations Team.
  • Participate on Student Emergency Grant Team.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or related field and License-eligible as governed by The Iowa Department of Health, defined by the Bureau of Professional Licensure when possessing a valid Iowa license OR Clinical Psychologists (e.g., Psy.D., Ph.D.) and License-eligible as governed by The Iowa Department of Health, defined by The Bureau of Professional Licensure for the State of Iowa Board of Psychology when possessing a valid Iowa license. Applicants possessing a valid license in another state must obtain Iowa licensure within six (6) months from date of residency in Iowa.
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in working with individuals from diverse social, cultural or socio-cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience treating clients using short-term models of individual psychotherapy/counseling.
  • Experience assessing and intervening when individuals present in crisis.
  • Experience outreaching to diverse groups.
  • Experience developing and implementing programs of a psycho/social nature.
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-graduate clinical work experience in mental health.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Skilled in mental health assessment, case conceptualization and treatment planning, proficient in short- term therapy, demonstrated crisis response skills.
  • Experienced in suicide assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a trusting, supportive relationship with students.
  • Demonstrated supervision competency.
  • Provide training to students, faculty and staff in First Aid Mental Health (RA’s, Coaches, etc.)
  • Ability to offer culturally-competent Counseling and Wellness services that are responsive to the needs of diverse students (i.e., sexual orientation, racial and cultural diversity, ability status, and religious affiliation).
  • Knowledge and experience in providing services to those affected by relationship violence, sexual harassment, stalking and sexual assault.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing services related to substance abuse: screening for and prevention efforts.
  • Effective small and large group presentation skills.
