The Department of Mental Health Services promotes psychological health, well-being, and success for all Indiana University School of Medicine learners and trainees across the State of Indiana. We deliver professional and comprehensive counseling and psychiatric services, crisis intervention, programming, consultation services, and outreach, as well as support the broader School of Medicine community and foster an environment where learners can thrive. We serve a diverse learner population of approximately 3200 trainees across the state of Indiana. DMHS is invested in providing care that is inclusive and culturally informed. We work collaboratively in the provision of mental health services, outreach, and liaison work, and work actively on the continuous improvement of our work with a commitment to adherence to best practices.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and treats mental health concerns.
  • Contributes toward personal development, maturation, and wellness.
  • Facilitates adjustment to the School of Medicine, residency training programs, and fellowship programs.
  • Supports academic persistence.
  • Works collaboratively with IUSM stakeholders, faculty, staff, and learners to support medical learners.
  • Promotes a respectful and inclusive IUSM learning environment that fosters professional and personal growth.
  • Provides direct clinical services (individual evaluations, individual counseling, couples counseling, group therapy, triage, and crisis care including some after-hours on call coverage) for IUSM medical trainees statewide with particular emphasis on meeting the needs of our BIPOC and URM medical learners. 
  • Delivers quality clinical care. 
  • Supports programming and outreach services that focus on the mental health needs and barriers to care for learners from underrepresented groups and the development and implementation of initiatives to address these needs. 
  • Leads efforts to assess, refine and redevelop these programming efforts for the department that are innovative, responsive, culturally relevant, and coordinated. 
  • Participates in departmental long-term strategic planning regarding diversity and inclusion issues and will coordinate and organize trainings that will help staff further develop cultural competency in the areas of identity development, intersections of identity and theoretical frameworks that promote equity and inclusion. 
  • Liaises with IUSM stakeholders, faculty, and campus committees for matters related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Performs diagnostic assessments; provide individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for medical learners statewide.
  • Provides triage referrals; provides crisis management and stabilization. 
  • Provides after-hours back-up call coverage. 
  • Communicates with referral sources within the IU system (i.e., program directors, lead advisors, faculty). 
  • Facilitates treatment planning including referrals to providers outside of the IU system for outpatient and inpatient care as needed. 
  • Coordinates post-hospitalization care and follow-up. 
  • Collaborates with members of the mental health services team, and across the School and university, to facilitate quality patient care providers outside of the IU system for outpatient and inpatient care.

  • Provides consultation to faculty, administrators, and stakeholders for issues that have psychological. 
  • Designs and delivers psycho-educational programming and community outreach services for IUSM medical trainees with particular emphasis on issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion. 
  • Works effectively as a collaborative member of the mental health services team to develop and implement programming and outreach. 
  • Participates in the assessment, implementation, and development of improvements to the delivery of mental health services and programming provided to medical trainees across the IUSM system with particular attention to the mental health needs of BIPOC and URM medical learners. 
  • Engages in policy formulation and implementation related to diversity and inclusion efforts for DMHS. Upon request, help staff formulate multicultural or social justice goals for internal DMHS staff performance review. 
  • Coordinates and organizes trainings that will help staff further develop cultural competency in the areas of identity development, intersections of identity and theoretical frameworks that promote equity and inclusion. 
  • Provides leadership and direction to DMHS and consult with campus committees related to matters of equity, diversity and inclusion. 
  • Maintains liaison relationships with other diversity positions and committees within IUSM.
  • Provides strategic consultation for the leadership team in areas of recruitment of staff and trainees, campus and department culture of diversity strengths and challenges, and how these affect the delivery of mental health services. 
  • Partners with DMHS leadership team to organize the DMHS response when issues related to diversity and/or inclusion are prominent. 
  • Provides leadership and consultation in deciding how to staff these events and presentation. 
  • Attends DMHS clinical and staff meetings. 
  • Completes scheduling of patients and documentation of clinical work in a timely and complete manner. 
  • Provides regular reports regarding work activities to the Director. 
  • Provides a brief overview of the academic year's equity, diversity and inclusion efforts from the past year, submitted to the Director for use in annual reports. 
  • Performs some work via telehealth. 

General Responsibilities

  • Conducts individual intake assessments.
  • Provides direct clinical mental health services to individuals, groups, and couples.
  • Manages individual caseload so as to be able to incorporate new clients in an ongoing manner.
  • Maintains accurate, timely clinical notes, following Quality Improvement committee standards.
  • Adheres to relevant ethical and legal standards of HIPAA, relevant professional bodies, state boards.
  • Consults with and refers to other professionals when appropriate (e.g. psychiatrists, medical providers, and dietitians).
  • Utilizes evidence-based clinical interventions and, as appropriate, document in clinical notes.
  • Serves on emergency response teams.
  • Participates in active educational outreach programs.
  • May supervise Master's level mental health students.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Master's degree in relevant mental heath area from an accredited program. 

Preferred

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years of post-degree experience. 

Preferred

  • Experience with minoritized populations. 
    Experience providing programs and outreach that advance values of diversity, social justice, and cultural competency within the delivery of mental health care.
  • Experience with Diversity, equity, and inclusion matters as they pertain to the delivery of mental health care. 
  • Experience with the young adult learner populations. 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Indiana or license eligible upon date of hire. 
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Indiana or license eligible upon date of hire.
